Literacy Targets
By the end of Year 1, students should have progressed from decodable reading books and be able to accurately and fluently read and spell Stage 1 words and a percentage of Stage 2 words and be able to consistently transfer phonic concepts into extended writing. Repeated targeted practice to facilitate automatic skills is the best way of establishing efficient skills in literacy, handwriting and oral language, which is a priority in Year 1. Aligned with the skill development sequence required for Year 1 students we have compiled an essential literacy bundle below:
- Phonic and Sight Word Sequence
- Structured Synthetic Phonics Time Savers – Stage 1 & 2
- Synthetic Phonics Flip Book – Stage 1
- Phonic Dictation – Stage 1
- Decoding and Spelling Games – Stage 1
Oral Language Targets
By the end of Year 1, children need to be able to:
- Generate complex sentences for writing
- Demonstrate inferential, predictive and evaluative comprehension ability
Here are the recommended PLD programs for Year 1 Oral Language development:
- Connecting Oral and Written Language – Step 1
- Generating Narratives – Set 1
- Generating Narratives – Set 2
- Comprehension Questions for 6 and 7 Year Olds
