Integrating PLD in Day Care and Early Childhood Education Centres

What do we mean by Early Childhood Education?

Early Childhood Education (ECE) is the period prior to the first formal year of primary schooling when children are developmentally 3-4 years of age. PLD refers to this period as the Early Years.

The Early Years period does not fall under the National Curriculum, but rather the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). Two different sectors are responsible for this age range:

  • Primary Schools: A proportion of Early Years programs are delivered within school grounds and in connection to the primary school. These might be referred to as Kindergarten (WA, QLD, SA, TAS), or Preschool (ACT, NT, NSW, VIC).
  • Day Care and ECE Centres: Alternatively, Early Years programs are also delivered quite separately to primary schools and within the daycare and early childhood education (ECE) centre sector. These Early Years programs tend to follow a strong EYLF program and facilitate small group learning alongside a strong play and child-centred focus.

PLDโ€™s Early Years Programs and The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)

The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) focuses on promoting play-based learning, intentional teaching and predictable daily routines, all of which are essential for setting children up for school readiness. Each resource in our Early Years SSP Kit has been thoughtfully designed and authored by Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists with these principles in mind, ensuring that educators can confidently meet the intentional teaching-learning outcomes of the EYLF while fostering each childโ€™s individual growth.

Our evidence-based resources contain options for both small and large group sessions and offer opportunities for intentional teaching and predictable daily routines helping to set children up for school readiness.

โ€œEducators act with intentionality in play-based learning when they โ€ฆ provide a balance between child-led and adult-initiated guided play.โ€ Taken from Australian Government Department of Education [AGDE] (2022).
