The beginning of the school year is an incredibly busy time of the year. Despite the workload ahead of all of you, it is imperative that schools start their year well. With this in mind, we’ve developed the following 2020 Term 1 essential checklist for teachers, school leaders and those new to PLD which should greatly assist during this busy time.

Term 1

2020 Back To School Checklist

1. Do I have the current PLD screening tools? Each of the PLD Screens has been updated for 2020 and they are available to download directly from our website. The screens are also available in Pre-Literacy and Early Literacy Screens. If you haven’t already downloaded the revised versions, click here or the ‘read more’ button on the pictures below.

2. Do I have the 2020 versions of the PLD tracking sheets? PLD recommends that the Early Years testing is placed on the PLD tracking sheets, which can be requested here. For step-by-step instructions on how you can establish a consistent screening and tracking process in Term 1, click here.

3. Have I downloaded and read all of the relevant PLD information for Early Years? These downloads include the Early Years Teaching Sequence Manual and The Pathway of Pre-Literacy into Early Literacy along with the Early Years developmental milestones I should expect my students to be achieving. These handouts are great to use as a reference guide or to hand out to parents at the beginning of the school year.

4. Have I shared the PLD process with the parents in my classroom? PLD believes that school and home must work together in order to have an effective start to the Early Years. PLD has created a range of Early Years parent information videos that are available to view and share here.

5. Have I read through PLD’s Term 1 Teaching Sequence? This guide covers a week-by-week outline tailored to your requirements in conjunction with our downloadable Teaching Sequence Manual.

6. Am I equipped with sufficient programs, to deliver effective explicit instruction to the students in my care? For 2020, PLD is making it easier than ever to ensure you have the essential resources you need for each year level, with a discount attached. 1. Are the teachers in the school implementing the 2020 versions of the PLD screening?

  • Register your details here to download the 2020 Tracking Sheets.
  • To find out how you can establish a consistent screening and tracking process across the school in 2020, click here.

2. Have all of the teachers in my school downloaded the 2020 revised screening tools? A full list of all the PLD downloadable screening tools are available to download here.

3. Are all of the teachers in my school up-to-date with their professional development and PLD implementation processes? If you have new staff, staff transitioning to different year levels or staff who require an update on their knowledge (as they were exposed to PLD 3+ years ago) then we would recommend a commitment to professional development.

4. Does your school have sufficient and up-to-date copies of the ‘essential’ PLD programs?

  • Option 1: PLD resources are continuously updated to follow the changes in the evidence-base of SSP research. Consider trading in and updating your current PLD range with a 20% discount. This can be easily done using the form found here.
  • Option 2: Consider extending the range of programs being implemented within the school. Fill out and return the attached form to us and we will create a quote to best suit your needs. If you are looking at a whole-school roll out of PLD please contact us directly.

5. Is it time to update the home reading books in the junior primary? Related to this point, have you established a plan to begin to phase out ‘whole language’ type reading books and replace them with decodable readers?
