The Early Years (Ages 3 & 4) are a significant period in a child’s development and therefore we have compiled the Ultimate Early Years Literacy & Oral Language PLD Starter Pack for primary schools.

Here at PLD, we believe that it is essential for early childhood theory to be balanced with opportunities for targeted and repeated skill development. Most importantly, efficient completion of the Early Years school year builds readiness for one of the most important years in a child’s schooling – the Foundation year.

In order to achieve the best possible outcomes for your children, play and child-centered approaches need to be balanced with targeted instruction. With this in mind, we have compiled the essential resources into an Ultimate Early Years PLD Starter Pack to begin a Structured Synthetics Phonics approach in your classroom.

The resources in the Ultimate Early Years Literacy & Oral Language PLD Starter Pack cover everything from oral language and literacy skills to movement and motor skills and are the best way to set your children up for success.

The Ultimate Early Years Literacy & Oral Language PLD Starter Pack contains:

Early Years: Kindergarten (WA/QLD/SA/TAS), Preschool (NSW/ACT/NT/VIC)

The Early Years are a significant period in a child’s development. For best outcomes, play and child-centered approaches need to be balanced with explicit targeted instruction. In the Early Years, PLD programs focus on pre-literacy skills such as phonological awareness and the alphabet sounds, as well as fine and gross motor and oral language skill development.

What should literacy development in Kindergarten/Preschool include?

In early literacy, PLD’s programs focus on literacy skills and strategies such as phonological awareness and the alphabet sounds, as well as fine and gross motor skills, movement and oral language skill challenges.

It’s important to define literacy in education by using set topics, recognising the different stages of each strategy;

  • Phonological awareness includes; syllable blending and segmentation, initial sound awareness and blending.
  • The alphabet sounds used in developing early literacy include; alphabet sound knowledge (lower-case letter focus), alphabet sound recall (for reading), and alphabet formation (for how a word is spelled).
  • PLD’s Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP) alphabet letter of presentation order is matched with the letter formation order, promoting literacy development. In this way, when learning the alphabet sounds, students are simultaneously learning to write alphabetic fluency.

Please Note

While Starter Packs offer a budget-friendly option and are well-suited for schools with limited resources or multi-year classrooms (e.g. Prep – Year 3, or Years 3 – 6), we strongly recommend the Integrated SSP Kits for schools seeking a streamlined, consistent and high-impact Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP) implementation.

Each Integrated SSP Kit includes all the essential resources a teacher needs in one easy-to-use box – reducing prep time, simplifying planning and supporting effective instruction. Designed to save time while maximising classroom outcomes, the kits offer the most comprehensive and efficient way to deliver PLD’s SSP approach.
