PLD’s Approach with EAL/D Students

EAL/D students face the dual challenge of learning to read and spell in English while also receiving classroom instruction in a language they are still acquiring. Although methods for teaching reading to these learners have long been debated, studies such as Educating English Language Learners and Developing Literacy in Second-Language Learners highlight:

  • Students who are able to read in their first language often achieve stronger outcomes when learning to read in English.
  • Evidence-informed programs, such as Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP), are effective for EAL/D learners.
  • It is appropriate for teachers of EAL/D students to modify their instruction to account for the language learning needs of their students.
  • Like all learners, EAL/D students achieve the best results in literacy when taught through a consistent, well-designed instructional routine.

Early Years & EAL/D

For EAL/D learners aged 3-4, the Early Years are a crucial time to build English skills through modelling and meaningful interaction. PLD’s Oral Language Starter Pack provides short daily routines and engaging activities such as retells, oral comprehension, and vocabulary games, supporting language growth in preparation for the first year of formal schooling.

Foundation & EAL/D

In the Foundation year, EAL/D learners benefit from targeted oral language support to build the English vocabulary, sentence structure, and comprehension skills needed for literacy. PLD’s Oral Language Starter Pack provides short daily routines that develop these foundations helping students strengthen their English while preparing for early reading and writing.

Year 1 & 2 and EAL/D

In Years 1 and 2, EAL/D learners need strong oral language foundations to support reading fluency and writing development, while also building confidence in Standard Australian English. PLD’s Oral Language Starter Pack provides resources to extend vocabulary, sentence generation, and comprehension, helping students connect spoken and written language and progress in literacy.

Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 and EAL/D

By the middle and upper primary, curriculum demands increase, and EAL/D learners with limited vocabulary often struggle to keep pace without targeted support. PLD’s Oral Language Starter Packs provide short daily routines that strengthen these skills alongside literacy, helping students consolidate junior primary foundations while preparing students for age-appropriate learning.
