PLD’s Year 2 Decodable Reading Books

PLD’s Year 2 Decodable Reading Chapter Books support the transition from decodable books to general reading material. Incorporating more advanced phonic code, they continue to build on a solid foundation of phonics and further develop strong word attack skills within extended text, preparing children for more generalised reading.

The Year 2 books comprise Sets 11 – 14 (with 10 books per Set and 40 books in total), and align to a typical Year 2 Teaching Sequence.

Each book contains 3,500–4,000 words structured into manageable chapters. With roughly 600–800 words per chapter, they provide an ideal daily 10–20 minute reading block designed to sustain a full week of reading practise. Each book also introduces specific new phonic concepts and carefully selected high-frequency words, giving students plenty of opportunity to practise new concepts while simultaneously consolidating previously learned concepts to prevent knowledge gaps.

• Before-Reading Practise: Every chapter opens with a dedicated warm-up section covering the target phonic concepts and providing opportunity to practise tricky and high-frequency words before starting to read.
• Rich Oral Language: Every chapter finishes by introducing new vocabulary, before providing literal and inferential discussion questions from that chapter to strengthen comprehension, and facilitate oral language building.
• Extended Learning: Each book concludes with further activities designed to reinforce the specific phonics focus of the text.
