Under the umbrella of PLD’s Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP) program, our ‘Starter Packs’ are carefully curated to equip classrooms with all the essential tools required for effective implementation of PLD.
We proudly offer two categories of Starter Packs:
- The ESSENTIAL Starter Packs focus solely on literacy.
- The ULTIMATE Starter Packs encompass both literacy AND oral language.

To align with evolving state and national curricula, as well as the Year 1 Phonics Screen, our 2024 Teaching Sequence Manuals have undergone updates. A heightened national consensus on student proficiency levels by Semester 2, Year 1, has necessitated adjustments to the phonics teaching sequence for Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2.
In summary, for Tier 1:
- Foundation students should conclude the year with high proficiency in Stage 1, Targets 1, 2, and 3 in reading, spelling, and writing skills (resulting in the addition of SSP Time-Savers into the Foundation Starter Packs).
- Year 1 students should conclude the year with high proficiency in Stage 2 reading, spelling, and writing skills (resulting in the addition of Stage 2 programs to the Year 1 starter packs).
- Year 2 students should conclude the year with high proficiency in Stage 3 reading, spelling, and writing skills (resulting in the addition of Stage 3 programs to the Year 2 starter packs).

Is it necessary to upgrade all starter packs?
- No. Earlier programs will still be effective, as long as schools are utilising Starter Packs that are relatively recent.
- Whilst earlier packs remain effective, aligning with Tier 1 students and Teaching Sequence Manual changes, the additional programs are recommended for schools with a significant number of Tier 1 students or those surpassing the Teaching Sequence manual. These specific programs can be purchased individually.
When will the upgraded starter packs become available?
- Hard copy and eBook versions of ALL Starter Packs will be accessible on the website for purchase by 20th November.
How can I compare the versions in the school and what is available through the PLD website?
- On each program listing page you will find a ‘PREVIEW BOOK’ button, allowing you to view the current editions and compare the existing programs in your school to the upgraded programs.
How can I compare the new versions of the starter packs with what is available in the school?
- Access the links provided above to preview the 2024 Starter Packs.
- The audit form is also an ideal way to review the essential programs available in the school. The 2024 version will be available by the 25th of November.
Will PLD upgrade very recently supplied programs?
- Schools that purchased Starter Packs in Term 4 of 2023, and are keen to order the additional elements, please email the office at mail@pld-literacy.org detailing the school name and which Starter Packs were ordered (from October 2023).
Will PLD upgrade recently supplied Starter Pack eBooks?
- Schools that purchased Foundation, Year 1 or Year 2 starter packs in Term 4 of 2023 (order date after 3/10/2023) are entitled to a free upgrade to the latest version.
- To claim your free upgrade, simply email the reception with the school name and invoice number to mail@pld-literacy.org.
- Redemptions or upgrades will occur when the full set of requested eBooks are available.
What does PLD offer for programs purchased prior to October 2023?
- For programs purchased before October 2023, schools have the option to trade them in. For further information on PLD’s trade-in process, please read here.
