It plays a part in reading, since a reader must perceive the distinct shapes of letters, but how important is often overstated from non-evidence based assessments or intervention. Skilled reading depends primarily on phonological processing and on mapping sounds to letters, not on visual memory of word shapes. Once children are taught the sounds that letters represent, the visual side generally takes care of itself.

A five-year-old writes b for d and reverses the odd number. This is typical early development, not evidence of a visual disorder. The reliable way to resolve b and d confusion is not more looking-and-matching activities, but linking each letter to its sound and to how that sound is formed, so the letter is anchored by more than its shape.

Misconception: Dyslexia is a visual problem, and children with dyslexia see letters backwards.
