PLD’s Year 1 Decodable Reading Books

Following the success of our Foundation Decodable Reading Books – recently awarded the 2025 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year in the Decodable Book Series category – PLD’s Year 1 Decodable Reading Books continue to support early readers in building strong, evidence-based reading skills.

Authored by speech pathologists and aligned with the Science of Reading, PLD Decodable Reading Books help students develop the right reading strategies. They emphasise decoding skills, ensuring children learn to read words systematically rather than relying on pictures or guessing from context.

Designed for children being taught to read using Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP), these books present phonics and high-frequency words in a sequenced order, enabling early readers to apply the phonics they are learning in the classroom to their reading practise.

PLD’s Year 1 Decodable Reading Books comprises Sets 7 – 10. Set 7 completes the initial code, with single sounds, blends and initial vowel and consonant digraphs. Sets 8, 9 & 10 then move into the extended code and include vowel and consonant digraphs.

Each fiction book showcases beautiful photography of Australian locations, paired with engaging facts and information about the area, making reading both educational and inspiring.
