Integrating PLD in Day Care and Early Childhood Education Centres

Early Childhood Education (ECE) refers to the years before the first formal year of primary school, when children are typically 3 – 4 years old. At PLD, we call this stage the Early Years. The Early Years is guided by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). PLD’s Early Year offering aligns with the EYLF, complementing play-based learning with intentional teaching to build pre-literacy foundations, motor skills, and oral language for school readiness. The  Early Years operates  within two different learning contexts:

  • Primary Schools: Early Years programs linked to schools often combine play-based learning with structured small-group instruction. (Kindergarten in WA, QLD, SA and TAS, and Preschool in NSW, ACT, NT and VIC).
  • Daycare and Early Childhood Centres: Programs delivered in ECE settings typically follow the EYLF closely, with a strong emphasis on play and child-centred learning.

Downloadable Manuals
  • Early Years SSP Kit Manual: The Early Years SSP Kit Manual for Early Childhood Centres outlines a 12-month sequence for oral language, pre-literacy, and movement & motor development. Activities are designed as short activities that can be repeated several times a day and woven into play, routines, and small-group times, making it easy to adapt for children who attend on different days.
  • Screening & Tracking Manual: The one-minute progress checks are is recommended to be presented to each child each term. For the children who are acquiring skills more slowly than their peers, it will be important to schedule smaller, focused group sessions over each day of attendance. The Early Years Screening & Tracking Manual provides clear instructions for teachers on how to assess and track students.
  • Term Tips Demonstration Videos: PLD’s practical, easy-to-follow demonstration videos will walk you through how to implement SPP in your ECE centre effectively using PLD’s Early Years programs.
Training Options

PLD offers a variety of training options, delivered in-person and online, to suit different learning preferences and schedules. These options range from full-day and half-day sessions to a series of after-school workshops. Whether you’re new to PLD this year, seeking a refresher or transitioning to a new year level, the options below cater to your needs. Download our Professional Development Flyer here.

New to PLD?

Already Trained but Needing to Refresh & Refocus Your Skills?

After introducing PLD’s structured synthetic phonics (SSP) programs into your classrooms, it is essential for schools to stay actively involved in the management of the program. Changes in staffing and the busy nature of schools can impact the implementation process and ultimately, the fidelity of the program fades over time.

Screening & Reporting in the Early Years

The downloadable PLD Tracking Sheets play a significant role in PLD’s methodology. These sheets bridge the gap between the Early Years programs and the Early Years Screening & Tracking Manual. By conducting 1 – 2 minute progress checks each term, each child’s capabilities are mapped onto the Tracking Sheets, which guide targeted instruction. This flexible approach allows educators to keep tabs on every child’s skill development, even when attendance patterns vary, ensuring that no child’s progress is overlooked. The results provide both a clear picture of individual growth and a practical plan for intentional teaching across the centre.
