Upcoming Seminars Scheduled in Victoria

The Victorian Department of Education announced on 13 June 2024 that all Victorian government primary schools will be expected to implement a structured literacy approach when teaching reading to students from Prep to Year 2, to improve reading standards.

PLD, as an evidence-based provider of Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP) programs, has already assisted many schools with making this transition. Here is why PLD is worth considering when implementing SSP:

  1. PLD provides an Australian, evidence-based Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP) approach for primary schools and is endorsed by multiple Education Departments, LDA and AUSPELD.
  2. PLD programs are aligned with the Science of Reading and derived from the disciplines of speech pathology, occupational therapy and education, an approach which contributed to PLD receiving the Primary Educational Publisher of the Year award a record four years in a row.
  3. Our SSP program can be implemented in F-2 or as a consistent whole-school approach.
  4. We offer ongoing support including Live Chat and complimentary access to our School Support Coordinators to help you and your staff achieve the best possible literacy outcomes for your students.

Implementing a Structured Literacy Approach

This full-day seminar outlines PLDโ€™s structured literacy approach. It provides Victorian educators with a means to investigate if PLD is an appropriate option for adopting PLDโ€™s Structured Literacy program from 2025.

This seminar aims to provide an outline of PLDโ€™s implementation within a school from F-2 (or whole school; F-6).

The presentation provides an outline of the following:

  • PLDโ€™s Stages 1-6 is explained, along with the associated assessments for the junior, middle and upper primary.
  • Learn more about the three targeted teaching groups on the basis of placement tests. (This is explained using sample class testing results.)
  • Learn how to assign and track the development of early reading and fluency decodable reading books.
  • Find a scope, sequence and process that is practical, realistic, and time-efficient to implement and will cater for advanced, average, and delayed students.
  • Explore the commonly encountered scenario in which a proportion of students can enter Year 1 at a pre-literacy level along with the recommendations for programs, explicit teaching, programs and skill development tracking assessments.
  • Learn about the explicit pre-literacy skill teaching that is recommended early in the Foundation (Prep) school year.
