To Create A Good Speaking And Listening Environment

  • Brainstorm with students what makes a good listener and speaker.
  • Have a reward system that promotes good listening and speaking behaviours in the classroom.
  • Give the students specific feedback on their listening and speaking skills e.g. “You are doing great listening. I see that you are keeping your body still”.
  • Use puppets that demonstrate good and poor listening behaviours and have students identify the type of behaviour it is and then show you themselves.
  • The speaking and listening resource posters can be used to support interaction within the classroom.

    From the age of two, children should have a vocabulary of approximately 50 words and a sentence length of 2 to 3 words. Put simply, from a young age children should be very verbal.
