Make a start or refine PLD Implementation in Term 4

Term 4 is an ideal time to trial implementing PLD either within a classroom or across the school. By trialing PLD now, any issues can be addressed and resolved prior to the new school year. Whether seeking to refine the current implementation or make a start in Term 4, the information outlined below should be of interest.

Step 1: Understanding PLD’s 2020 implementation in the Early Years

Step 2: Following the viewing of the online course, profile the class within Term 4

  • Present Subtest 3a: Onset & rime blending, Subtest 4a: Group 1 of the alphabet sounds and Subtest 5a: Group 1 of  Alphabet sound recall and formation from the Early Years Screening & Tracking Manual. This progress check should take 2 minutes per child.
  • View this 5-minute video on EARLY YEARS data collection.
  • ‘Hide’ the Term 1, 2 & 3 columns and only plot the Exercise 3a & 4a onto the Tracking Sheets that admin has set up. There is no need to plot exercise 5a.

Step 1: Understanding PLD’s 2020 implementation in Foundation

Step 2: Following the viewing of the online course, profile the class within Term 4

By this stage in Foundation, students should be reading and spelling (even though there will likely be a proportion of students who are still at a pre-literacy level and hence unable to read and spell.) Please collect the following information:

  • Review spelling skill development through presentation of Stage 1 Target 1 & 2 from the Term 3 version of the Phonic & Sight Word Sequence Placement Screen in the Foundation Screening & Tracking Manual.
  • For students who are presenting with delays, reassess their pre-literacy skills and/or early reading and spelling skills through the presentation of the Foundation Pre-Literacy Screen from the Foundation Screening & Tracking Manual so that adjustments to their program can occur.
  • Review reading skill development through presentation of Exercise 2, 3 & 4 from the Foundation Early Reading Profile in the Foundation Screening and Tracking Manual.
  • Remember to plot the student results onto the Tracking Sheets that the admin has set up. View this short 6-minute video on how to transfer the test scores onto the tracking sheets.

Step 1: Understanding PLD’s 2020 implementation in the Years 1 and 2

Step 2: Following the viewing of the online course, profile the class within Term 4

  • The Phonic & Sight Word Sequence Placement, in the Year 1 & 2 Screening & Tracking Manual,  has 4 formats (i.e. one for each term). It is recommended that the End of Term 3 version is presented to the class.
  • Remember to plot the student results onto the Tracking Sheets that the admin has set up. The online course will showcase how to complete this process.
  • View this short 6-minute video on Year 1 and 2 data collection.
  • Remember, all of the Year 1 students require the presentation of The Early Reading Profile, from the Year 1 & 2 Screening & Tracking Manual, so that appropriate decodable reading material is allocated. The screen takes approximately 3 minutes per student. In Year 2, only the students with below-average reading require the screen to be presented. Mark words correct or incorrect. If correct, also write in what the student verbalised. Also, make a note of whether there is whole word reading or sounding-out occurring E.g. sh/u/t or sh/ut or shut. Within the Year 1 & 2 Screening & Tracking Manual on pages 18 and 20, you will find examples of semester one and two Year 1 reading profiles should look.
